The Vortex – Tumbling Wing

The Vortex - Tumblewing

The Vortex is really an auto-gyro plane also called tumblewing. It is thrown high into the air, and as it falls the air rushing past it’s ‘wings’ in opposite directions causes it to rapidly spin, slowing it’s decent. A tumblewing is a paper airplane which rotates about a horizonal axis. Its mode of flight is more akin to confetti than traditional fixed wing aircraft; However, several model aircraft have been built with tumbling wings for lift (force). Because it has no need for ballast, the tumblewing design has a lower wing loading and makes a good walkalong glider which is easy to make and fly.

Tumblewing II gliders are one of the most enchanting and curious paper flying contraptions ever conceived. They are simple to make, easy to fly and cost absolutely nothing. Constructed from lightweight telephone directory paper, they can be kept aloft almost indefinitely and tumble along on the updraft of air generated by a large sheet of cardboard (the paddle). In very still air and with a little practice, they can be steered in any direction, tumbling along at eyelevel just in front of the ‘pilot’. Best flights are achieved in a large, still room (eg school hall or gymnasium)

To fold the Paper Avion ‘The Vortex – Tumblewing’ you should follow step to step the following sequence.

paper airplane The Vortex - Tumblewing
  • On the Left side of the paper leaf appears before folding and on the right side of the leaf after folding it.
  • The central image indicates you like you have to fold the leaf, after The folding you should click the button ‘Next’ to see the next step.
  • You have to repeat these steps until you finish folding the Aircraft.
  • With the button ‘Back’ you will return to the previous step.
  • The button ‘Start’ takes you to the step 1 and the button ‘End’ takes you to the last step.

Tear a page out of the phone book (make sure it’s not an important page). The tumblewing will only fly straight if it is symmetrical.
At right are directions on how to make a tumblewing paper airplane. The tumblewing is easiest to build and fly. Although it flies more like a piece of confetti than an airplane, the tumblewing flies the slowest of all the designs because it requires no ballast.

How to throw the paper airplane The Vortex – Tumblewing

Flying Instructions: Flying requires a large, still space such as an empty hall. The slightest breeze makes steering a tumblewing almost impossible.
1. You’ll need a paddle made from a large piece of flat cardboard around 50cm × 60cm or bigger (at least as big as the top of a pizza box)
2. Hold the cardboard paddle by the top edge as shown
3. Hold the tumblewing above and slightly in front of the paddle
4. Release the tumblewing so that it falls away from you5. Quickly change your grip so you are now holding the paddle as shown, with the bottom edge tilted slightly further forward at about 30 degrees
6. Chase the tumblewing with your paddle, walking at just the right speed to keep it hovering near the top edge of your paddle – steer the tumblewing by turning the paddle
